Message From Mosque Foundation President Dr. Zaher Sahloul - Introducing Arabic Language to Public Schools

In the last local election on April 7th, 2009, three candidates running for the School Board of District 230, Laura Murphy, Carol Baker and Michael Hastings won their seats. In a recent Candidate Forum organized by the Mosque Foundation, these and other candidates in neighboring school districts pledged to support the introduction of Arabic language to the curriculum in their public schools. This is a landmark moment in the Mosque Foundation initiative to introduce Arabic Language to our Public Schools.  Read full article...

Fiqh of Hadith - The Friday Shower       by Sh. Kifah Mustapha

showersAbu Said Al Khudari (RAA) said, "I witnessed the prophet (PBUH) saying that showering on Friday is a must for everyone (who reached puberty) and to brush the teeth and to apply perfume if available." Hadith narrated by Bukhari. عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله تعالى عنه قال: أشهد على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "الغسل يوم الجمعة واجب على كل محتلم وأن يستن وأن يمس طيبا إن وجد". رواه البخاري.

Volunteer Spotlight - Fatima Nassar                  by Connie Martin 

fatimaOne might wonder how a widow with five children, two of whom face serious physical challenges, could find the time or the energy to volunteer her time.  Yet Fatima Nassar takes life's challenges in stride and considers volunteering her time and service to the masjid as a duty.  "After my husband passed away, I made a promise to God to work for His sake, and to choose the best place for my kids to spend their time in." Fatima says.

The implications of the 2008 presidential election for the Muslim community are obvious; our community now has the opportunity to engage in political affairs to an extent we never could have imagined. However, the future did not always seem as bright, especially during an election season where the word "Muslim" was thrown around as if it were a slur, and accusing a candidate of being "Arab" was deemed enough to tarnish his image.   Read full article...

End of Life Issues                              by Connie Martin

endoflifeOver 250 people were in attendance for the Mosque Foundation Monthly English Program about "End of Life Issues."  A diverse panel including Mosque Foundation President and Critical Care Physician, Dr. Zaher Sahloul; Sh. Mohammed Hanoti, Mufti of Washington, DC; Attorney Wesam Zegar; Advocate Christ Hospital Chaplains Rev. Wendall Oman and Refat Abukhdeir; and Funeral Director John Hann, addressed the spiritual, medical and legal aspects of a broad range of topics such as life support, organ donation and transplants, autopsy and abortion.

Mosque Foundation Annual General Assembly Meeting

The Mosque Foundation held its Annual General Assembly Meeting on Saturday, April 18th to discuss the Annual Report and elect seven Board of Director members.  Congratulations to the newly elected and re-elected Board members:  Zafar Ahmed, Ghassan Abdallah, Dahoud Shalabi, Hadia Hijazi, Rafeeq Jaber, Abdullah Abdullah, and Abdulla Zain-Edin.
