Going Green By: Sumaya Hussein     8th grade, Conrady Jr. High
THE THREE R’S…REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE
As we all know, to "reduce" means to create less of something; creating a small amount. I know the majority of us don't want overfilled landfills. We want less trash and more recycling. Another way to reduce is to buy only the items that are necessary. By doing this, we are creating less trash. By creating less trash, we are saving the Earth.  Believe it or not, you are saving the Earth in ways you don’t even know.
To reuse means to use things over. You can reuse materials by not throwing them out. For example, if you had an old backpack, why throw it out when you can reuse it and make it into something else. Doesn't that make so much sense? By reusing materials you are creating less trash. When you are shopping, try to purchase items that are reusable, not wasteful.
Let’s go green! We can all go green by recycling. Recycling is a great way to help the Earth. Instead of piling trash in the landfills, we can reuse the materials and reduce the amount of trash. To do so, call the village you live in and ask for recycle bins. Be sure to remember the three R’s: reuse, reduce, and recycle.
We, as Muslims, should set a good example for others. We believe that we should thank God for giving us Earth to live on. Therefore, we should take extremely good care of it by recycling as much as we can. We want to reuse as much material as possible. Let’s be the best Muslims we can and show our love for the beautiful Earth.
You might be wondering what we can recycle. Well, I’m sure we all know to recycle paper, but what else is there to recycle? There is plenty. We can recycle aluminum cans, glass, bottles, and plastic. For example, when you’re done drinking a can of pop, throw it in the recycle bin not the trash can. It might take you a while to do so, but please try to. This way you are gradually making your environment green.
By recycling paper, you are saving trees, and by saving trees you are reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. This also reduces the amount of global warming. Carbon dioxide is the main reason for global warming because it traps the sun’s heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. How easy is it to recycle paper? It can be ripped up paper, or crumbled paper,  just recycle it!
Believe it or not, by recycling aluminum, you are saving energy. It takes much less energy to melt cans into fresh aluminum. Majority of the energy comes from electricity produced by burning coal. This is also another way to cut down on carbon dioxide. It’s very simple and it is a great way to help the Earth. In order to save our planet we should try to recycle as much as we can. Let’s try to make a difference!  This is our planet, let’s take care of it!
