MFCC High School Forum
By Connie Martin

Many parents in our community assume that their child will never be exposed to drugs in a middle class suburban high school or middle school, and consequently never have “the talk” to warn of the dangers of these social illnesses. MFCC High School Forum tackled this disturbing issue on May 16th with special guest speaker Kevin Smith, and an original mini documentary produced by Muslim students at Stagg High School. Mr. Smith, a former drug dealer, spoke in startling detail of his experiences chronicling a life of drugs and violence on the streets of Chicago, his ultimate arrest and nine year prison sentence, and his conversion to Islam while incarcerated. Even more unsettling were the interviews with students at Stagg High School acknowledging that they know of students who use drugs, and have even been approached by other Muslim students to try it! A special thanks goes to the Stagg documentary team for accurately depicting the peer pressure and temptations they face on a daily basis. This should be a wake-up call to parents to keep open lines of communication with their kids.
